Soul-Restoring Delights in Tennessee
By Tracey L. Campbell
While in college, I unearthed the perfect balm for an emotionally battered psyche - the clean mountain air and hilly vistas of Tennessee. In the years since, I've made an equally important discovery - these natural delights are best experienced from the cozy embrace of bed-and-breakfasts such as the Iron Mountain Inn.
Located in Butler, a small town about 25 miles northeast of Johnson City, the inn is perched in the Cherokee National Forest's Iron Mountain Range. Tennessee transplant Vikki Woods built the elegant, airy retreat in 1997 as a respite from the busy world. "When my husband died and I was looking for something to do with the rest of my life, I went to a career counselor," she explains. "After discussing my wide range of interests, as well as the fact that I love to entertain and find people fascinating, running a bed-and-breakfast seemed the most logical choice."
The inn is the perfect place to foster her passions. The building has four guestrooms decorated to reflect different periods of Woods' life. The Equestrian Room, adorned with a cast iron stove and warm color palette, was inspired by her lifelong love of horses. The nostalgic Family Memories Room features antiques, historic artifacts and shadow boxes from her family's travels. Named for the season Woods discovered the property, the Appalachian Spring Room is decorated with airy florals. Finally, the Green Room brings out Woods' love of the outdoors and harks back to her days in the theater.
The Iron Mountain Inn is located at 138 Moreland Drive in Butler, Tennessee. Visit www.ironmountaininn.com or call 423-768-2446.
