In September, the worlds leading celiac investigators presented new research into the causes and treatment of celiac disease at the 15th International Celiac Disease Symposium in Chicago. Much of the conversation centered around how the microorganisms and bacteria in our intestinal tracts (called the microbiome) shape our immune systems, possibly influencing the development of celiac disease. Almost every organ in the body is affected by the presence of bacteria in the gut, presenters said.
A new FDA-led study is easing concerns raised in recent years about arsenic levels in rice. Between 2012 and 2013, the agency tested 1,300 samples of rice and rice products for both total and inorganic arsenic levels, the most toxic form. Scientists determined that while levels variedmore processed forms like instant rice had lower levels than whole grain brown ricethey were too low to pose immediate or short-term health risks.
Fish oil is the latest victim in a stream of sensational media reports on the alleged dangers of supplements. In recent years, similar patterns occurred with calcium, multiple vitamins and vitamin E. Exciting and encouraging studies, such as the one finding people who took fish oil live longer or another linking multiple vitamin use with lower levels of cancer, dont seem to garner as much coverage.
