Awakening

As spring unwraps the buds outside my window, I’m grateful for the renewal of the seasons. After the hard winter of record-breaking storms and snowfall, the promise of warm weather in the air feels like a miracle.

The lesson of spring—rebirth, renewal, restoration—shouldn’t be lost on those with allergies and food sensitivities. Having lived through dark days of malaise, discovering that a special diet not only helps restore health but can actually taste good is good news, indeed. It’s hope you can sink your teeth into.

Springtime’s sacred holidays, Easter and Passover, underscore this happy theme—from death to life, from slavery to freedom, from grief to joy. They also provide a wonderful reason to set the table and dig in. Commemorate and celebrate with our delicious gluten-free, allergy-friendly recipes. And don’t forget Cinco de Mayo. It’s a great excuse to throw a fiesta. Our menu offers the very best of fresh, flavorful Mexican cuisine.

Look inside for practical tools and tips to enhance your day-to-day life. Jazz up your culinary repertoire (page 20). Locate a fun camp that’s safe for your special-diet child (page 36). And plan an excellent adventure: explore the West (page 42).

These pages also include inspiring stories of courage and strength. A group of new medical conditions related to food allergies, eosinophilic-associated disorders, is striking kids at unprecedented rates, as are autism spectrum disorders. How do families deal with these life-altering maladies? Turn to “Life Without Food,” page 28, and “Autism Mother,” page 16.

As the days soften and lengthen, take a moment to revel in the lush possibilities awakening all around. Signs of renewal are everywhere, each a reminder that winter isn’t forever. The other day, I spotted a tiny bird’s nest hidden beneath the leaves of the geranium hanging in a basket on my front porch. A harbinger of beautiful, new life in an unexpected place… just like a special diet.
