Two of the biggest health hazards in your home are under your kitchen sink—drain cleaner and oven cleaner. Other household products also contain chemical additives that are harmful and should be avoided, says chemist Martin Wolf of Seventh Generation. Examples of three dangerous additives that are widely used. Butoxyethanol (butyl cellosolve, butyl oxitol, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether) Used in many glass cleaners, all-purpose cleaning sprays and abrasive cleaners, this additive is a neurotoxin that can depress the nervous system. Manufacturers instruct consumers to “use in a well-ventilated room.”
