Red Rover, Red Rover
Brings Allergies Over

By Dr. Bruce Bessey

Of all allergic conditions, sensitivity to pet allergens can be the most challenging to diagnose, manage and treat. The problem? People are usually emotionally attached to the very thing that triggers their allergies--their pets.

Many different pets provoke allergies, including cats, dogs, rabbits, rodents, guinea pigs and ferrets. A pet allergen is found in an animal's dried skin (dander), saliva, and urine. Early avoidance of the pet allergens can prevent the escalation from mere sensitivity to severe allergic disease and asthma. But for those who have a pet and love that pet, avoidance can be nearly impossible and giving the animal away, unthinkable. So what to do if Rover and a person with pet allergies share the same home sweet home?
