Mr. Food Puts the
“Special” in Special Diet

Art Ginsburg, a.k.a. Mr. Food, is a busy man. As television’s “quick ‘n’ easy chef,” Mr. Food appears daily on TV newscasts around the country, sharing creative ideas for simplifying and enhancing everyday meal preparation.

But even in the midst of his hectic schedule, he still finds time to celebrate. His latest cookbook, Mr. Food Every Day’s a Holiday Diabetic Cookbook, contains more than 140 quick and delicious recipes for every holiday of the year, ranging from appetizers and main courses to side dishes and festive desserts. We caught up with the energetic Mr. Food for a quick dish between shows.

Living Without: Why did you decide to focus on diabetic recipes?

Mr. Food: I don’t have diabetes but my interest started because of my association with Nicole Johnson, who is the spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Nicole met me at an event a few years ago, and asked if I would do some shows featuring diabetic menus. She and I did a couple of shows together that stressed the fact that a restricted diet can be quick, easy, and sensible, and that diabetic food can taste great. The ADA then suggested we do a cookbook that would reflect this philosophy. I said, “Fine, let’s give it a shot.” But I didn’t have much hope for it. In the past, I’d talked to other publishers who thought such cookbooks wouldn’t sell. Well, we did it, and we got the shock of our lives. It turned out to be the most successful cookbook the ADA has ever published — 200,000 now in print. It’s also translated into Spanish.

LW: Every Day’s a Holiday is your second cookbook for people with diabetes. How does it differ from the first?

MF: The first one was so popular that we said, “This is wonderful. Let’s do another one!” Every Day’s a Holiday turns every meal into a festivity. It is truly a holiday every time you sit down to one of these recipes. You can eat normally and celebrate as long as you eat with moderation and use your exchanges. The book also helps people stay on track during the holidays or other special occasions, when it might be more challenging to stick to the right foods, and not feel deprived. People will say, “I can’t believe something this rich (or sweet or creamy) fits a diabetic meal plan.” Every day’s a holiday when food looks and tastes this great.
