In the Know About
Diagnostic Tests
for Your Child

By Mary Bonner

Whether your child suffers from vomiting, diarrhea, recurring abdominal pain, or failure to thrive, the investigative search for answers can be a very complex and frustrating process.  Symptoms often wax and wane, or even spontaneously disappear.  The decision to test or not to test can be a perplexing one.

The battery of tests or procedures may be worse than the symptoms the child is experiencing.  “We often have to balance what we do for the children with what we do to the children,” says A. John Yazdi, M.D. “Pathology is very age dependent; you need to have a strong suspicion of what you are looking for before you do a procedure.”  At the same time, some answers can’t be found without the use of invasive tests.

Knowledge is power. The following information provides a look at the more invasive tests a child may require.  Use this as a reference and guide for understanding your little one’s health needs.  A definitive diagnosis may involve one or more of the following procedures:

  • Blood Tests
  • Urinalysis
  • Stool Studies
  • Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging Procedures
  • Endoscopic Procedure
