Finally! Progress on Gluten-Free Labeling

I’m happy to report that the Food and Drug Administration has inched ahead on its long-awaited labeling requirements for what constitutes “gluten free.” FDA’s proposed rules arrived at the White House for final review earlier this week, according to federal records. The new regs must now pass through the White House’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs before being enacted.
In summary, FDA’s proposed ruling defines a product as “gluten free” if it does not contain the following:
(1) Wheat, rye, barley or any hybrid of these grains;
(2) Ingredients such as wheat flour that have not been processed to remove gluten; or
(3) Any item made up of more than 20 parts per million of gluten.
According to RegWatch, OIRA is currently considering a total of 143 proposed rulings; 84 of these have been under consideration for more than the 90-day review limited set by the White House.
After years of waiting for the FDA to act on this critically important labeling standard, we’re very pleased to see this movement. Meanwhile, we and the rest of the gluten-free community continue to watch … and to wait some more.
