Allergy-Friendly Lollipops

My son has been begging to get his hair cut. Joseph is not overly vain or interested in getting a new, funky “do.” So I had to wonder why a 7-year-old boy would have such a strong and sudden desire to hit the stylist's chair.

It turns out this has more to do with lollipops than locks. I have recently allowed him to accept the lollipop the hairstylist offers after his haircut. He told me he loves how the pops taste, but even more he is just thrilled that he gets to accept this confectionary on a stick--just like all the other kids.

Allowing Joseph to enjoy Dum Dum Pops lollipops from the hairstylist or Yummy Earth Organic Lollipops from the Kid's Club bin at Whole Foods Market breaks the family’s long-standing rule that he is never to accept food from anyone other than my husband or me. But after six years of living with his food allergies (peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, milk, egg and soy), Joseph has a healthy respect for their severity and knows the necessary precautions we take to ensure his safety. He understands that only certain brands of products are safe for him and knows that getting lollipops is a rare treat. It’s also a nod to his growing independence.

When we arrive for his haircut, Joseph quickly checks the lollipop jar to make sure the hairstylist still carries Dum Dum Pops. The pops are there. After the haircut, he jumps from the chair and rummages around in the jar to find his favorite flavor—butterscotch. The moment that lollipop hits his tongue, his eyes light up. And I get to admire that happy look along with his handsome locks.
