A Glutton for Gluten Free

A dear friend of mine--a wonderfully centered human being who has her act together and her head on straight--told me that she recently tasted her very first gluten-free cookie. She took a little bite of this cookie (to be precise: an almond horn cookie made by Aleia’s Gluten-Free Bakery in Old Saybrook, Connecticut), and then she took another…and then another. Before she knew it, this paragon of self-control (usually) had consumed the entire package.

Here’s what happened, in her own words:

My colleague had put these gluten-free cookies out in the office kitchen and I ended up eating most of them. Then I got embarrassed and took them home to hide the evidence--and I ate them all! I thought I could replace them by buying some at Whole Foods but, no, I actually had to call the bakery and arrange to have a package sent to the office. But no more for me because obviously I can’t control myself with these cookies. Yum!

The crux of the story is that my friend is not a celiac, she is not gluten free and she is not on a special diet. One nibble into our world set her up for a binge.

I can’t stop smiling.
